Jamie McGrigor, Highlands & Islands Conservative MSP, has today tabled a motion in the Scottish Parliament expressing sadness at the death at the age of 106 of Sir Nicholas Winton whose “kindertransports” to Britain of Jewish children destined for the Nazi concentration camps led to him being called the British Schindler. The motion sends condolences to Sir Nicholas’ family and friends.Speaking today Jamie, who in 2014 tabled a congratulatory motion commending Sir Nicholas on his award by the President of the Czech Republic, Miloš Zeman, of the highest Czech state honour, said:“ Sir Nicholas Winton was a truly remarkable man whose humanity and generosity of spirit was immense but who remained modest all through his life despite saving the lives of literally hundreds of Jewish children who would have faced an inevitable death had it not been for his actions.“ It is particularly poignant that he died on the anniversary of the departure of the train he organised in 1939 which carried the largest number of children, 241, to safety.“ At a time of gloomy international news and threats of terrorism, Sir Nicholas’ bravery and altruism are a reminder of the good that can be done when individuals decide to take a stand against evil and extremism.”
