Street lighting concerns at Islay village

Two local elected representatives have contacted Argyll and Bute Council to press for action after it was reported that the street lights in an Islay village are out of action.

Residents in Portnahaven have expressed concern for their safety due to the unexpected blackout in the village.

Highlands and Islands MSP Donald Cameron and local Councillor Alastair Redman (Kintyre and the Islands Ward) are hoping that the lights can be returned to working order as soon as possible.

Mr Cameron said: “This really is the worst time for the village to lose its lighting,  with the dark nights, wintry weather and the Christmas holidays looming.

“I very much hope the Council can get the problem fixed quickly as local people may not want to take the risk of going outside when it’s so dark and possibly have an accident.”

Councillor Redman added: “We really don’t want to have local people inconvenienced, particularly at a time like this, when there is so much on everyone’s mind.

“We really need to find out what has gone wrong and get it set right.”
