Jamie McGrigor, Highlands & Islands Conservative MSP, last night hosted an event in the Scottish Parliament for the British Dietetic Association (BDA) involving dietitians and other health professionals from across Scotland. The reception for MSPs, officials and staff was part of Dietitians Week 2015 and had a particular focus on dementia and the role dietitians can play assisting dementia sufferers. Speaking today Jamie said:“ I was delighted to be asked by the BDA to host last night’s event in the Scottish Parliament and to meet with dietitians and other health stakeholders from across Scotland, including the Highlands & Islands.“ Whilst dietitians do a huge variety of work in Scotland’s health service, last night focused on the vitally important area of caring for our friends and family members who suffer from dementia.“ Those with dementia are more likely to suffer from malnutrition and a recent survey of dementia carers suggested around 81% of sufferers experienced difficulties in relation to eating, drinking and nutrition. Given the Scottish Government has made dementia a national priority and the huge financial implications it has on NHS budgets, it is critical that politicians are fully aware of the importance of proper dementia care and the contribution that dietitians make.”
