Jamie McGrigor, Highlands & Islands Conservative MSP, yesterday lodged a Parliamentary motion commending the work of the Royal Highland Education Trust (RHET).
Jamie lodged the motion to coincide with the start today of the first RHET week, which aims to raise the charity’s profile. The RHET seeks to "take the classroom to the countryside" by arranging for schoolchildren to visits farms and agricultural markets and for farmers to go into schools to talk about their work.
Speaking yesterday, Jamie, who is the Scottish Conservative Environment Spokesman, said:
“The RHET is a fantastic charity which does excellent work to increase our young people’s knowledge of farming and countryside issues. It has a key part to play in meeting the needs of children to participate in outdoor learning as part of the Curriculum for Excellence.
“I think it is really important for Scotland’s young people to learn about how our farmers produce the food we enjoy, and to understand better agriculture’s role in our economy and communities.
“I wish the RHET every success in its week of events, and I would encourage anyone interested in the charity to find out more about it and consider volunteering for it”.
