Jamie McGrigor, Highlands & Islands MSP and Convener of the Scottish Parliament's Cross-Party Group on Crofting, has urged crofters with concerns about crofting legislation to make their views known to a review of such legislation being undertaken by industry body the Crofting Law Group. The review will look at problem areas within existing crofting legislation.
Scottish Environment Minister Paul Wheelhouse, who has responsibility for crofting, has pledged that the Scottish Government will seek to address the findings of the review’s report.
Speaking today, Jamie McGrigor said:
“During the passage of the Crofting (Amendment) (Scotland) Act 2013, it was made very clear to me and other MSPs that there were a number of anomalies and other issues within crofting legislation that were causing difficulties for crofters and landlords. A number of these issues have been raised at meetings of our Cross-Party Crofting Group in the Parliament.
“I am pleased that the Crofting Law Group is taking this review forward, and I would strongly encourage any of my crofting constituents, as well as all those others with an interest in crofting, who have concerns about current crofting laws to make their views known to the review.
“Ultimately we want to achieve legislation that is clear and understandable and helps support the crofting sector, which is an integral part of the economy and life of the Highlands & Islands”.
