Mental Health waiting times unacceptable

Monday, 7 October, 2019
Maurice Corry MSP

There are many modern challenges facing people in all walks of life, the causes of which are not yet fully understood. Social and financial pressures contribute, as does social media pressure to keep up with one another.

Maurice Corry MSP (Conservative - West of Scotland) said "We hear about mental health constantly, but very little is done about it. The funding and services provided are poor with usually 6-8 week waiting times. These times are unacceptable. People who are feeling depressed need immediate help - the equivalent of having an A&E for physical trauma.

"That is why I continue to develop the concept of a Centre of Excellence for Mental Health at the Vale of Leven Hospital, which will allow people to drop in and get immediate help from trained mental health workers.

"I recently visited the Vale of Leven with Shadow Cabinet Secretary for Heath & Sport, Miles Briggs MSP, who supports the idea. There is also cross party support from a number of MSPs, including the backing of the Cabinet Secretary for Health & Sport Jeane Freeman."
