Jamie McGrigor, Highlands & Islands MSP and the Scottish Conservative Spokesman on Europe & External Affairs, is urging constituents and businesses in the Highlands & Islands to give their views on the proposed referendum on the UK’s membership of the EU and the UK government’s EU reform agenda. Jamie spoke out after the Scottish Parliament’s European & External Affairs Committee- on which he sits- today launched an inquiry into these issues and called for evidence.Commenting today Jamie said:“ The UK government is determined to work with EU partners to secure a better deal for the UK and then put this new deal to the people of the UK in a referendum. The Prime Minister has been very clear that he plans to negotiate, get a deal that's in Britain's interest and then recommend Britain stays in it. I have consistently supported the UK’s membership of the EU but agree with the UK government that significant reforms are needed to allow it to be much more flexible and a partnership of nations that looks outwards and helps Europe meet the economic challenges of global competition.“ I hope constituents and business people in my region who have views on the referendum and the EU reform agenda respond to the call for evidence from my Committee. It is important we gather as much input as possible as we conduct the inquiry over the next few months.”
