News release from Jamie McGrigor MSP.
McGrigor holds talks with Minister on Campbeltown-Ballycastle ferry.
Jamie McGrigor, Highlands & Islands Conservative MSP, today
(28th April) held talks in the Scottish Parliament with the
Transport Minister Stewart Stevenson about efforts to
re-establish the Campbeltown-Ballycastle ferry. Jamie McGrigor
has consistently supported the campaign to bring back this
ferry service, raising the matter repeatedly with the Scottish
Government and working closely with his colleague Kintyre
Councillor Donald Kelly.
Commenting afterwards Jamie said:
“ I asked the Minister for a meeting to provide me with an
update on his efforts to restore the Campbeltown-Ballycastle
ferry service and we had a useful and positive discussion where
I was assured that there is a hint of light at the end of the tunnel.
“ The Minister told me that the Scottish Government remains
committed to restoring the service and that it was taking the
early steps to progress the tendering process although no date
was yet set for this. We also discussed the role of the
Northern Ireland Assembly and the establishment of a ferry
service to and from Northern Ireland that would serve both
Campbeltown and one of the Ayrshire ports, something that the
cost benefit study identified as being highly valuable.
“ I remain 100% behind the plan to re-establish this ferry
service as I believe it would be a massive boost to the whole
of Campbeltown and Kintyre, especially the tourism sector.
Local people are frustrated at how long it is taking to move
things forward and that is why, along with Councillor Donald
Kelly, I am trying to keep the pressure up on the Scottish Government.”
